Phuket's Gibbon Project cares for gibbons recovered from touts and reintroduces animals to the wilds on Phuket where possible. The project, established in 1992, aims to continue to reintroduce gibbons on Phuket to their natural habitat, and at the same time make locals aware of the benefits of living alongside the island's native animals. A visit to the forest sanctuary, where the incredible sound of the gibbons can be heard from kilometres away, is a must for all tourists who wish to see Phuket's natives and its environment treated the way it should be. The good news also seems to be that the use of slow lorises and other creatures by tourist touts in Patong and other destinations, appears to be rapidly diminishing. The project is open each day from 9 am to 4.30 pm and can be found by heading nine kilometres east of the Heroines Monument.
