Chumphon: One of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand on the Gulf of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are Prachuap Khiri Khan, Surat Thani and Ranong. To the west it also borders the Burmese province ofTanintharyi.
Geography: Chumphon is located on the Isthmus of Kra, the narrow landbridge connecting the Malay Peninsula with the mainland of Thailand. To the west are the hills of the Phuket mountain range and its northern continuation, the Tenasserim Hills, while the east is the more flat land on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. The main river is the Lang Suan River, which originates in Phato District.
Island: A number of small islands in the Gulf of Thailand form the Chumphon Archipelago including • Ko Chorakhe Island off Chumphon. Chorakhe means crocodile in thai language. • Ko Phithak 1 km offshore the island has distinctive rocks formations and fishing villages. • Ko Khai a small island located off Ao Bo Mao Beach in Pathio District. It is encircled by coral reefs with fish and other marine life. • Ko Ngam Yai and Ko Ngam Noi. This pair of adjacent islands is located 17 km Thung Wua Laen Bay. Swallows’ nests are harvested there for export.
Beaches: • Ao Bo Mao A long beach in Pathio District nearby the airport with tourism focus. • Ao Thung Makham, a bay of 2 semicircles. • Hat Sai Ri, a long white sand beach with views of nearby islands • Hat Thung Wua Laen, Chumphon’s key tourist beach • Hat Arunothai, a beach with a shrine-memorial to Prince Chumphon. • Hat Tawan Chai, a long beach with coconut palms.
Caves: • Tham Khao Ngoen, the cave’s wall is also inscribed with his Majesty’s initial Chor.Por.Ror. • Tham Khao Kriab, limestone cave with a monks residence at the entrance. • Tham Rap Ro (Wat Thep Charoen), this foothill temple cave with of two caves, The Ai Tay Cave houses a Buddha image known as Luang Pho Lak Mueang. • Tham Khao Plu Hot Spring, 3 hot springs at the foot of the mountain slope including 4 caves. Wildlife includes squirrels, pig-tailed monkeys and birds.
