Tropical beaches in Khao Lak, the way a beach should be…
When you see the Khao Lak area for yourself, you will be completely blown away by the fact that the resorts are so low key and quiet. Beaches this beautiful would be totally exploited and destroyed anywhere else on earth, but the people of this area love their beaches so much that they have put strict ordinances in place to preserve the overall environment. No structures can be built higher than a palm tree in Khao Lak, resulting in an abundance of seaside shacks and bungalows that keep the entire profile and perspective of the area rather humble.
It’s not to say that the place isn’t one of the most spectacular on earth. It’s just that the emphasis here is on natural beauty, not man-made monstrosities. The majority of resort areas in the world are built up, sprawling concrete circuses, and there is always a silent lamentation beneath the bustle and glitz. How often can you say that they got it right?
Khao Lak gets it completely right. Going to the beach ought to be for the purpose of going to the beach. Unfortunately, too many places have their boardwalks and marina cut-offs. Not Khao Lak. All 24 kilometers of beach are contiguous and open to the public. No private clubs or resorts here. It’s not to say that the accommodations aren’t some of the finest in the world. It’s just that they are tasteful, not tacky.
Phang Nga is the main town of Khao Lak. It is a sleepy community, with a few restaurants and shops. Mainly it is a service point of the area. One of the most popular things in Phang Nga is to climb aboard a scuba boat and head over to the Similan Islands for some of the most wonderful diving in all the world. The trip from the coast to these islands is usually around 3 hours long.
The Similans are a chain of islands off the coast which have been saved as a National Park. An incredibly popular destination for the sporting type of tourist, this majestic and serene archipelago has been named one of the world’s top 10 diving destinations by National Geographic magazine numerous times. Warm, clean, clear waters hold one of the most abundant and spectacular arrays of fish, corals, and other sea creatures to be found anywhere in the world.
Khao Lak was one of the hardest hit areas in the catastrophic 2004 tsunami. Many lives were lost here, and many resorts were destroyed and did not recover. It is a testament to the prestige and popularity of this area, then that the overall tourist economy has recovered so well. phiphi-ferry.com has been right here in the thick of things the whole time.
