The pier is just north and east of Surat Thani, not far from the Donsak Hospital and city offices, and is easily accessible from the airport and by taxi or minivan.
The center of Samui island is virtually untouched mountainous jungle, with beaches along its coasts and the nearby islands of Mu Koh Ang Thong and Koh Pha Ngan. Hotels and restaurants are everywhere, and vendors set up food booths in the blocked-off streets each Friday in Bophut and on Sundays in Lamai.
