Koh Lipe
A journey to Koh Lipe is literally like no other. The island, on the maritime border with Malaysia, is so remote that it stands at the edge of the Turutao maritime park that was once used in an early episode of "Survivor". These islands are inhabited by fewer than 1,000 "sea gypsies" who live in families and clans, and while tours are possible, they're not advised unless you're prepared for the lack of modern amenities.
Not so on Koh Lipe itself, where people from across the globe trek to experience island life, including a few restaurants and interesting nightlife along with the exceptional diving and other natural features of the island. There are ATMs and these days, electrical power around the clock. There is Wifi and mobile phone service, a pharmacy and hospital, and even an immigration office during the high season - but remember that, if you enter Thailand here, some visa policy changes apply.
As with other small islands, there is no modern pier. Travelers need to make sure they also have made arrangements for a smaller transfer boat from the ferry, which does not come in directly to an island pier. While the Phi Phi Ferry runs directly to Koh Lipe from Phuket, one round-trip each day, that's only during the high season between November and April.
