The Tonsai Pier essentially serves all of the Phi Phi Islands, with travel to many destinations completed by a longtail boat ride from the ferry. The pier is located in Tonsai Bay, jutting out to the south of a narrow isthmus on the Phi Phi Don island. With cliffs surrounding it - and inviting tourists to hike and explore - the pier and nearby Tonsai Village are the gateway to the island and its tropical adventures.

The pier itself is a destination, with wide tiled-brick walkways lined with flags fluttering in the breeze. Boats come and go constantly during daytime hours, while beachgoers enjoy the sun and sights. The village itself is a busy center of cultural and business life, but there are no cars - travel is by bicycle or on foot. On the other hand, it's not the edge of the world. Shopping in the village includes a 7-Eleven store alongside more traditional fish markets, jewelry stores and boutiques. At night, the streets fill with people headed out for dinner or to enjoy the legendary Tonsai Village nightlife.

Ferry connections at Tonsai Pier

The Phi Phi to Phuket ferry is the busiest link, with departures spread across the whole day — speedboats take around an hour, ferries about two. Almost as frequent are the boats to the Krabi side: Krabi Town, Ao Nang and Railay, the latter only about half an hour away. Arriving on Koh Phi Phi

Tonsai is a walk-on pier: you step off the boat straight into the village. A small pier and national-park maintenance fee is collected in cash on arrival, so keep some change handy. If your hotel is on Long Beach or up at Laem Tong, longtail boats shuttle onward from the pier — hotels on the northern beaches usually arrange the transfer for you.
